Mick Preston

Mick started playing in bands at the age of 15. Convinced by others he was a better singer than a musician he decided, if he wanted to be in a band” that’s what he would do.

From youth club to college Mick “tinkered” in a series of bands before getting a real job.

In the early 70’s he came back to music with a college friend in a renowned club outfit SAHARA led by Bob Thompson (Carnaby). Gaining a reputation as a performer Mick was asked to front the rock band Stairway. Mick’s love of rock saw him join them and then leave to join a newly formed 7 piece group Screw. Writing and recording their own material drew the attention of Manfred Mann and Mick was approached to join his band. Screw disbanded but later approached by former members Mick became founder member of Dawn Trader which included Carnaby guitarist Wayne. Dawn Trader became one of the leading lights in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal Bands. Performing with major artists like Def Leppard and writing and recording with Whitesnakes Bernie Marsden. Their music still influencing young US and Canadian bands today and in demand in Japan, the band are writing and recording a new album to be released 2010.

For personal reasons Mick retired from the business for 14 years.

Coaxed out of retirement to play a “one night only “gig by Bob in 2002, one night led to another and Blind Panic was formed lasting 15 months. Mick was reunited with Wayne and forming Morpheus with Bob on bass. This excellent band imploded and Mick, Bob and the drummer Richard Coleman formed The Project with former Blind Panic guitarist Dave Thompson. During this period Mick and Bob’s love of the 60s created Carnaby Rocks with the same line up. The 2 bands ran together but Richard left to join a Led Zeppelin tribute band and Carnaby Rocks emerged in its own right. Dave later left to form his own band Devils Advocate and Wayne was brought into the band.

Mick is most proud that unlike many bands claiming to be 60s Mod bands Carnaby only play music recorded in the 60s and whats more they all love it!
